Technology Point for Today

The Effects of a Constructivist Intervention for Pre-Service Teachers Study was to determine how well the different intervention strategies were involved in helping to aid the teachers create engaging lessons for students.  The lessons that the in pre-services teachers were creating had to have the following attributes: Active, Constructive, Intentional, Authentic, and Cooperative Learning.  In my opinion, the “technology point for today” is still centered around having students engaged and responsible for their own learning.  Teachers should merely be the facilitators in the student’s learning.  As long as lessons are focused on the students actually doing all or most the work, then the students will be engaged.

The State of Technology

"How can students become technology literate while learning language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and fine arts?"

Students can become more technology literate while learning language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and fine arts because students learn by doing.  Technology is not a passive act, it completely active.  In order for one to learn what her or she is doing on a Computer, Interactive White Board, iPad, or Software Programs, one must have to do the work in order to learn the work.  This is the highest level in Bloom’s Taxonomy.  When students can apply the knowledge that they have learned, then they can create, design, and evaluate material.  This is something that can be done in all content and elective areas.  For example, I have done a Project Based Lesson with my students this pass year.  The students were required to research the different aspects of the Decomposition Process of the Casey Anthony Murder Trial.  They then had to write a three page report on their findings and present them to a “Review Board.”  Next, the students had to create a Multimedia presentation that highlighted the aspects of their paper.  Both assignments had to be emailed to me prior to the presentation date as well.  This assignment included the following aspects: Science, English Language Arts, Music, Computer/Career Technology, and Art.  Even though this was a science class, I incorporated other content areas.

Web Authoring in a K-12 Educational Setting

Web Authoring in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use Web Authoring in my school district to communicate with my students.  I plan to use my classroom website as  a communication tool so that my students along with their parents are up to date about what is going on in my class.  Whatever assignments that were missed,  the student can go to the website to get the information.  If the students have lost any sheets or handouts that I have given them, they can simply go to the class website, download the file, and print it off.

Multimedia/Presentation Tools in a K-12 Educational Setting

Multimedia/Presentation Tools in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use Multimedia/Presentation Tools  in my school district as a Project Based Assessment.  Students love to do projects using Powerpoint Presentation software; however, it is outdated.  I plan to have students create a Multimedia presentation uses Prezi to present the process that they went through for our District Science Fair.  This way students can incorporate digital images and various other technology components to create a real-life project.   Also, students will realize that there is life outside of Powerpoint Presentation Software.

Spreadsheets in a K-12 Educational Setting

Spreadsheets in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use Spreadsheets in my school district by creating graphs.  Since I teach Science, I plan to have my students complete  typed Lab Reports.  A huge part of Lab Reports are results based on data that has been collected.  Students can use a form of spreadsheets in order to create a variety of different charts and graphs: Pie Charts, Single Bar Graphs, Double Bar Graphs, Scatter-Plot Graphs, etc.  With this type of software integration, not only will I be incorporating Science, but Math as well.

Databases in a K-12 Educational Setting

Databases in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use Databases in my school district by utilizing  Online Gradebook Databases.  With grade book databases, such as, iNow and Engade, administrators, teachers, parents, and students can be on the same page when it comes to students’ performances.  For teachers,   grades can be entered at home.  If parents have access, they may access their students grades before any problems get out of hand.   Administrators do not have to solely rely on their teachers for information about students’ grades.

Diagrams, Maps, and Webs in a K-12 Educational Setting

Diagrams, Maps, and Webs in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use Diagrams, Maps, and Webs in my school district by implementing Strategic Teaching.  With Strategic Teaching, there are certain methods that are used such as; Before, During, and After Reading Strategies.  I can use different educational software programs such as Inspiration to create a KWL Chart or a Concept Map.  This will help my students take an active role in their learning and help me, as their teacher, become the much needed facilitator.

Digital Images in a K-12 Educational Setting

Digital Images in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use Digital Images in my school district as a Project Based Assessment.  Students love to do projects using Powerpoint Presentation software; however, it is outdated.  I plan to have students create a Digital Story to present the process that they went through for our District Science Fair.  This way they will have you use the pictures that they have taken to create a real-life project.  Furthermore,  the students will realize that this is something that they can actually use outside of my class in the “real-world.”

Word Processing in a K-12 Educational Setting

Word Processing in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use Word Processing in my school district by enforcing Writing Across the Curriculum.  A number of people, children and adults, believe that Microsoft Word is the only way anyone can key(type) a document. However, Microsoft Word is merely a Word Processing Document.  There are several students that might have had Microsoft Word on their computer for a “trial period.”  In students’ eyes, once the trial period is gone, then they feel as if they do not have to complete the assignment.  Google Docs  is an example of an Online Word Processing Document.  With this, students do not have to worry about not having a way to complete their assignments.  Since, I teach Science, I plan to have my student complete a typed Lab Report that must be saved and emailed to me as an attachment.  This way I can utilize a number of Technology Standards.

The Internet in a K-12 Educational Setting

The Internet in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use the Internet in my school district as a collaboration tool.  Distance Learning allows students to have technology resources at their fingertips and to collaborate with other instructors and students outside of their normal school setting.  In my school district, we are trying to get our students to be able to compete in a global society.  We certainly do not have the financial resources to bus students away to get this experience.  What better way to get our students connected is to connect students with other students all over the world to get this type of exposure.

Portfolios in a K-12 Educational Setting

Portfolios in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use of Portfolios in my school district as an integration tool.  An example of this is Livebinders.  Livebinders is a way that I can showcase my talents and accomplishments as a Digital Portfolio of my professional work.  In my educational community, Portfolios can showcase my students’ work in a safe manner.  Being as educator, I have to keep track of all of my students’ work.  The traditional way is to get a File Folder and put all of their “work samples” in them.  However, in the 21st Century, educators have to implement technology in the classroom by being a facilitator in students’ learning.  In other words, students have to be able to know and use technology based on the higher end of Bloom’s Taxonomy.  If students are truly doing this task, then teachers have to have a way of collecting the information in an orderly and convenient manner.  Portfolios are the key to implementation of that task.

Software Basics in a K-12 Educational Setting

Software Basics in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use software basics in my school district by providing myself and my co-workers with various websites that can aid teachers in developing their own databases of resources to help them teach their students.  Also, different software programs can be used as an enhancement, enrichment, or a remediation for what has been taught within the classroom.  Softwares are not limited to certain disciplines,  they are several software programs that cater to a wide range of disciplines and electives, as well as grade levels.

Hardware Basic in a K-12 Educational Setting

Hardware Basic in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to use hardware basics in my school district by helping out my fellow co-workers.  Today, there are many teachers that do not have a clue about any kind of hardware that is associated within their classroom setting.  Some teachers barely know the difference between hardware and software.  By knowing basic information on Technology hardware, I can better assist my district’s Technology Support, Technology Coordinator, and my fellow co-workers.

Preparing to Use Technology in a K-12 Educational Setting

Preparing to Use Technology in a K-12 Educational Setting

As a highly qualified educator, I plan to prepare the use of technology in my school district by implementing effective classroom management and effective, engaging lessons that are based on NETS-T and NETS-S standards.  By researching the do’s and don’t classroom management with technology, I will be able to have more time to devote to my students’ individual needs.  Also, if my lessons are engaging then I should not have any issues with classroom management because the students will be too busy to cause any other major issues.  Understanding the necessary resources in teaching with the aid of technology is to always work smarter and not harder.  There are several different Internet sites that have resources that are readily available for educators to use.

More Power to You- Communicating Online: Who, What, When, How, and Why

More Power to You- Communicating Online: Who, What, When, How, and Why

“Reflective Practitioner”
When one is in an online class, it is communication is completely different.  When a person is in a regular, face-to-face classroom, the instructor has the convenience of looking at a student’s facial expression and hearing the tone of the student’s voice.  However online instructors do not have that liberty.  There are certain online rules or etiquette that are involved when communication online.
Communication clearly while one is in an online class is key to learning and building relationships with one’s instructor.  It is imperative not to give off the wrong vibe when communication with an instructor so that he or she will not take it the wrong way.  However,  this also goes both ways.  The instructor can always give of negative vibes to his or her students as well.  Therefore, proper “netiquette” is key.  Also, today students are accustomed to Social Networking sites and texting.  The way one communicates via texting and within social networks are not appropriate when it comes to communication with an instructor.  When one communicates with an instructor via email or a specific Learning Management System, he or she should realize that it is a formal setting; therefore, formal communication language should take place rather than informal.

More Power To You-Types of Online Classrooms

Types of Online Classrooms

“Reflective Practitioner”
Today, a number of Colleges and Universities are using a variety of “Online Learning Management Systems.”   There are several popular “Online Learning Management Systems that Colleges and  Universities.  Some of these popular systems are as follows: Moodle, Blackboard, Learning Studio, Blackboard Angel Edition, and Propriety--meaning some online system that is created by the school for the use of at that particular school as well.  There are also different types of Online Classes.  Some classes could be Online, Hybrid, or Web Enhanced.   Online Classes are completed orchestrated online.  Hybrid Classes are a mixture between online interaction and face-to-face interaction.  In order to be successful, both requirements of interactions should be met.  Web Enhanced Classes are classes that are generally face-to-face interactions, but has a major online component as a requirement.
One would need to have knowledge of the various types of online classes because it directly affects his or her success within the class.  For example, if a student that lived out of town registered for a Hybrid class and did not know how Hybrid classes were conducted, then he or she could affect his or her grade if he or she fails to come to class on the schedule days.  When students do not have the knowledge of Online Classes,  they might feel overwhelmed because they are in learning the course work as well as, learning the technology aspects of the class.

More Power To You-The Online Class and Community

More Power To You-The Online Class and Community

“Reflective Practitioner”
In an online class, there are many different factors that are involved other that the individual student.  In an online class, it is never simply one person involved, there are several different people, groups, and technology components that are involved.  By this alone, one can see that it is not just an individual.  By this description alone constitutes a community.  A community is a group of “people with common interests living a particular area.” http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/community.
When online students know the individuals and their roles within the community, students tend to be more at ease with their online class, as well as, have them better prepared for class.  For example, the Instructor, Advisor, and Tech Support are few people that should be in an Online Community.  The Instructor is the immediate contact with an online class when it comes to specific assignments, deadlines, and activities.  Advisors are useful when matters arise that the Instructor might not can answer.  When it comes to technical issues,  the Tech Support is the point of contact when online services on particular websites are down.

More Power To You-The Commitments of an Online Student

More Power To You- The Commitments of an Online Student

“Reflective Practitioner”
Being able to manage his or her priorities is a main issue when one starts an online class.  This is something that one might hear often and at times are scolded for not managing his or her priorities; however, rarely do students have someone to  provide strategies for students.   When one have great time management and stress management then one meet whatever goals that they set previously.
One should plan out their goals in terms of allotted times and in categories.  To teachers, it might seem as it is similar to lesson planning.  And in a way, it is just that: a plan.    By creating a plan, one will avoid “procrastination.”  When one take responsibility for his or her own learning and realize when he or she needs helps, then one can fully commitment to the demands of being an Online Student.

More Power To You-Motivation and Goal Setting: Overcoming Obstacle

More Power To You-Motivation and Goal Setting: Overcoming Obstacle

“Reflective Practitioner”
Motivation and Goal Setting is a great tool that one would need in an online class.   This helps students to “plan their time wisely and set reasonable goals.”  At times one may have other “conflicting priorities” that may hinder a person’s motivation.  Some of those “conflicting priorities” can be financial burdens and/or family obligations.  When one choses to make a commitment of taking an online class, on have to make sacrifices financially, as well as, physically and emotionally from their family. One way of dealing with these different obstacles is to write troubling matters down in a type of journal.  This way, instead of keeping all of the troubling matters inside, one can have a way to release all of the built up tension inside of him or herself.
This is extremely important online students because it allows some structure to a self-paced class.   If one is able to “plan their time wisely, set realistic goals, and overcome obstacles” then one can reap the benefits of an online classroom.   It is also important for one to set realistic goals as well.  For example, if a student learns that he or she has a ten page paper that is due the following day, then it is not realistic for him or her to set a goal of having it completed by 8 o’clock in the morning.  Even though this might seem as if the person might be extremely self-motivated and setting goal, but in the long run, it is simple going to be more stressful and depressing.  In short, it is not realistic.

More Power to You- know Thyself: Self-Discovery for the Online Learner

More Power to You- know Thyself: Self-Discovery for the Online Learner

“Reflective Practitioner”
In order for one to be successful in an online class, he or she must know his or her own strengths and weaknesses.  “Self-Discovery” is a way for students to aid in their own learning.  If students will actually take the time to do this determine their strengths and weaknesses they will not be as frustrated with online classes or any classes for that matter.
One might wonder why is “Self-Discovery” so important.  It is important because this is a tool that can follow one through out ones educational career.  For example, if one knows that they do not learn well by listening to an instructor, but learns better when an image accompanies the lecture, then half of the battle is already one when it comes to ones learning.  One way of implementing this task is through knowing ones individual learning style.  There are several Learning-Style Assessments that one can utilize to self-assess him or herself.

More Power to You- Becoming an Online Learner

More Power to You: Becoming an Online Learner
“Reflective Practitioner”

As one first decide to become an “Online Learner,” he or she must first decide what are his or her “motives” behind taking this route.  Is it because he or she may feel as if it is going to be easy.  Does he or she simple does not want to go to class.  This should be the first steps that one must decide on before he or she becomes an “Online Learner.”
The second most crucial part of becoming an “Online Learner” is making sure one has all of the necessary technical equipment to be a successful student.  If one does not have all of the necessary equipment or does not have reliable access to the necessary equipment, he or she will not be successful as an “Online Learner.”  There is nothing more that an Online Instructor dislikes more than to have a student state that he or she could not get to a computer or that his or her Internet Service went out.  The potential “Online Learner” has to be honest with him or herself and what he or she is trying to accomplish or get out of the class.
