Teacher Portfolio Activity One: A High School Completion Crisis
Question(s):
I believe that the high school completion rate is not higher because there has been a disconnect between the students, society and education. A lot of students are not impressed with what is going on in the classrooms today and other technology has their attention. Also, there is generational poverty that plays a role as well.
I believe that so many students leave school before graduating because they are simply bored. To the students, there is not anything that they have to look forward to if they stay in school. Also, parents are not requiring them to stay in school like they used to. This is partially because society has children that are raising children. Instead of the “child-adult” growing up and accepting responsibility, the “child-adult” is still stuck at that child level.
How can you as a teacher differentiate your instruction and universally design your teaching so a majority of students are more likely to experienced success and less likely to leave school?
As a teacher, I can differentiate my instruction and universally design my classroom by changing the classroom learning environment or changing the different ways that curriculum is being delivered. For example, I could start by rearranging my teaching by the following: low tech, mid tech, and high tech tools. This should help bring in more engaging technology that will appeal to the individual students as well as their individual learning style.
